Stubborn Halt at XP startup

When starting my Win XP Pro systen it suddenly started halting at the blue "starting XP" screen. I can CTL/ALT/DEL and the desktop will appear. When the desktop comes up I have no taskbar and Mcafee takes forever to start. Thinking it was Mcafee I deleted it, and the problem stayed. I have also tried removing (to the minimum) the programs/processes at startup. I am currently at a loss for now.
Thanks for the help

Even tho you deleted the infamous lockup specialist, Mcafee, you may still have some of it on your system. Do a "search" and see if anything comes up for Mcafee. Delete anything associated with it. If the problem persists, try running a virus scan on startup by putting the CD in before you power up. Just don't reinstall the Mcaffee crap after. AVG is free and effective. These ideas worked for me in the past, but since I'm sorta a newb here, make sure you see what others say.

Thanks for your reply..I tried to completely remove Mcafee again, and still didn't have any luck. Ran spybot and adaware abd found some data miners. Cleaned them up, reinstalled mcafee and ran a complete scan. Now it loads quickly to the desktop, but stalls to load mcafee again. When it stalls I get no taskbar.

It seems the "halt' is my computer trying to initalize its network services. If I watch the task manager I will soon see the TCIP services start followed quickly by Mcafee. It started when I created a 3 PC/1 printer network with static IP addresses.
