file won't delete win-xp

there's a small avi-file located in the my documents folder of the pc of a friend of mine. this file can not be deleted. windows XP claims the file is being used by a person or program, but no programs are active. i've tryed renaming the file, this works nor helps (same error message)
this pc is not connected to the internet, so no problems on that end.
could i use a program to remove by brute force?

You might look at this thread. Seems to be a common problem with XP.
