Can you clone an XP installation?

I got this client whose HD seems to be going back for warranty and it would be a pain to install everything to the new one again.

Any ideas?

TIA

The latest version of Ghost will do it too.

10-4.

I had been reluctant to buy one of those proggies since I am used to do all these procedures manually, but now that my time is limited I think I'll follow your advice and get one of those.

Can I use the version of Ghost that comes with some mobos' CDs?

Thanks.

What version is it?

When you fire it up, the front / splash screen should tell you the version number.

David.

Guess I'm SOL. The version I have is an old one that doesn't work with XP.

I'm gonna check with my client in question. I think that his Intel mobo came with Ghost.

I would image that if the hard drive is going south, it would not be an ideal candidate for ghosting/imaging. The problems would be ghosted also.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the difference between ghosting and imaging?

Also, how could the problems be ghosted to the new drive? Do you mean problems like bad sectors and the like? My suspicion is that the problem is with the drive itself, either mechanically or the controller card. The problem is that the drive is sometimes not recognized at boot. It only happens the first time he turns on the machine in the morning. Once the drive is heated up the problem disappears, and he can reboot several times without problems.

Too bad that Newegg doesn't ship to Mexico.

I think I'll have to buy the downloadable version. Thank you regardless.

Disk Imaging and ghosting is the same thing.

Got it. Thanks.

I found a copy of Ghost 2002 that came with a Biostar mobo. But it's strange: the program is just an exe file. Is this OK?

I thought Ghost was a program that you had to install in Windows like NAV or the Firewall.

The newer versions you can install but all that does is to make it easier to make a boot disk. Generally you boot off of a boot disk and load the program. This makes it somewhat OS independent.

Ghost works great I use it all the time with XP. I use the 2002 version. There is a newer one that does in Windows but I have read of some people having problems with the images so I haven't bothered to upgrade.

OK, so, the only thing I have to do is to copy ghost.exe to a boot disk and that's it?

I use XP Home/Pro, so I cannot boot with a Win98 floppy disk. What would be the easier way? To make a bootable CD? How do I do dat?

I am gonna clone the Win installation in the problematic HD to a new one.

Use the Ghost Boot Disk utilitie to build a boot disk for you. It will give you mouse support, as well as options for CD RW and USB support. Going from HD to HD won't, obviously, require RW or USB support, but mouse support is nice.

Ghost Boot Disk utility?

How do I activate that? There's only one file called ghost.exe.

I have never done this before so please bear with me. I know my questions must seem very dumb to all of you.

No such thing, Nuclear Krusader!!! All questions are good questions!!

Going back a post or two, yes you can use any bootable floppie, including Win98. Just put the ghost.exe on it and run it from the command line.

(The boot disk utility comes with the full package and runs from Windows, so if you don't have it, no biggie)

Don't worry about "playing' with it, as you can't really hurt things much, unless of course you tell it to wipe out the wrong drive or partition.
