winxp problems
hello, this is my first post in pc mech forum.
I am having some problems with windows xp. It all started yesterday when I couldn't get online using my Roadrunner connection. Other problems were that my computer would boot up fine until I choose my name to log into xp. Sometimes it would freeze, other times it would just show the wallpaper background and do nothing. I tried system restore and that seemed to make it worse. I finally decided to do a repair using the windows xp disc. At first it seemed to solve my startup problems, until I rebooted. The only problems I seem to have now are that when I click on my name to get into windows it takes anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes to load everything up. After that everything goes at normal speed. Some things I click on come up right away, others like internet explorer take a while to come up, then displays a cannot display webpage message. My system restore also appear to be missing. I get an entry point not found error. On monday I installed two windows updates, they were Q817606 and KB823559. I don't know if these updates may have damaged anything. They disappeared when I did the repair from the CD. My problem with my internet connection is that I have all zeroes for my IP address and subnet mask. I called time warner and they couldn't help me Right now iam using my old computer to send this post, since I still can't get online using my other computer.Any help would be appreciated, thanks |

Curious, how many accounts are on your XP install, and how many people actually use your computer?

hi homer1981
first do a full anti virus scan on your computer then backup all important files next run check disk then if you can download spy bot and run that then post back.

I have five accounts under win xp. I did a full anti-virus scan using norton anti-virus 2003, there wasn't anything. Im about to try the running check disk. When windows starts up I get a tcp/ip not installed message from norton anti-virus. I tried to run check disk, but I get a message that windows needs exclusive access to some windows files and to restart. I tried restarting, but got the same message. Im also wondering what spy bot is.

Try rebboting in safe mode, press f8 at start up to get into safe mode, that wiil give exclusive access. You can find Spybot at downloads.com .

I had the exact same thing happen
Homer,
I had the exact same thing happen on the 7th or 8th. I don't know what caused it but I tried everything I could think of to fix it and nothing worked. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. hamiljs@wku.edu. -DvLMN |

I had a similar problem and it was resolved by reinstalling SP1. The "repair" corrupts the SP1 and has to reinstalled.

Disable Norton autostart, and check whether TCP/IP is actually not installed (ie. go to Network Connections and check if it is there, and the checkbox is checked).
If it isn't there, then it needs to be installed. If it is there, then Norton is probably screwing up and slowing down your Windows startup. Unless you have an always on connection without a decent firewall, or are in the habit of opening any email attatchment that crosses your path, you don't need Norton running at all times. Just run it for weekly scans, or when you suspect trouble. Otherwise it causes problems and takes up resources. This is all theoretical however, and may not be the solution. Try it htough, it might help. (what do you have to lose?) |

the tcp/ip is in network connections and is checked, so it probably is a problem with norton? I tried running check disk in safe mode and it still gave me the same message. I'll try to get SP1 and reinstall that and hopefully that will work for me.
The firewall I got is from Sygate, I don't know if its any good. I had the norton one, but when I installed it, it blocked my internet connection so I got rid of it. |
