Menu popups - Strange

I'm not much with XP and have a wierd one on a friend's PC. Something is running in the background that keeps opening icons & menu items one after another. Also the lights (numlock & scroll lock) blink off and on on the kboard.

Has anyone run into this. The icons & menus being selected sequentially make it seem almost in some "tutorial" mode, but they don't stay long enough before the next item opens.

I hope this is clear. If not, I can explain further.

The first thing I would do would be a complete virus scan. If that shows negative then you could try System Restore back to before this all started.

Thanks Trudy. I thought about a virus. I did a scan with the original McAfee prog that came on the PC. It's a relatively new (6 month old) Compaq. I don't know offhand just how up-to-date the virus definitions are in it. Do you know a virus that does something like that?

To clarify: If doing nothing, the kboard lights mentioned above blink intermittently maybe every 2 or 3 seconds. The desktop icons also start hiliting themselves. This is about the extent of it when there's no user interaction.

However, once a menu is opened (Start, or even a right click on the desktop), the individual items on the menu start hiliting and executing from top to bottom.

There is nothing in the start up folder. There's a number of processes running, but I don't know enough to know which ones belong and which may be foriegn. Does anyone have a list of which processes MUST run. Maybe I could do a trial & error end of the others to determing the culprit.

I look forward to any other helpful replies or information.
