I just formated my hdd and reinstalled windows 98 se. My CABS folder is missing. I tried reinstalling windows but it still isn't there. And my second problem is that I cann't partition my hdd, i tried all the optoins that fdisk listed but it kept saying something like there is no room for a partion or something like that. Can someone please tell me how to fix it.

Hi Blue_Gundam2002,
Before you partition your drive, make sure to remove any previous partitions. Follow these instructions to clear and create all new partitions, then format the drives. Hope this helps. |

If you want to change your partitions now without starting from scratch, you will have to use partition magic... without that, your only option is to wipe the drive, partition as you please and format only to have to reload the system again.
As for your CAB files, Win98 doesn't install them by default. There are three things you can do now. 1) Copy the cab files from the CD to the hard drive. By doing this, you will have the CAB files, but Win98 will always be looking for them on the CD and you will have to manually direct Windows to the right location. 2) Vairiation of step one... copy the files, then hack the registry by searching for D:\WIN98 and changing the key when you find it to direct to the proper location. 3) Copy the files to the hard drive, run the installation from the hard drive instead of CD-Rom. When done, this will allow Windows to see the proper location when the CAB files are needed.

. . . and, to follow on Dr. Zaius & Hal's replies, here's a link to a Partition Magic vendor ($29 USD) in case you decide to try it. Handy program, the new version includes lots of extra tools for multi-boots, and backups: http://ebargainsoftware.com/powparv801.html
. . . and the Registry key that Hal referred to is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version . . . look for a value for "source path" or something like that. [I don't have Win98 handy, but the key would point to D:\Win98 if looking to the cd-drive for your Windows installation cd. You'd want to change the value to C:\Windows\Options\Cabs -->this is the folder where you'd copy your cabs] . . . Gary |
