Can't Install Service Pack 1

I just formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP Professional. I went to system updates to get service pack 1, I used the express installation. After it asked me if I wanted to install, it gave me the following message: "Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer." I have no idea what this means.

This is a legal copy of Windows, right?

Yes, it is a legal copy, and I also tried to copy the service pack onto a CD, but it gave me the same error. I can install other critical updates, just not Service Pack 1.

Chances are that inf file is damaged.

In Win98 I used to reinstall Windows over Windows, so damaged files got replaced by normal versions. But I dunno if this can be done in XP. Anyone?

Another option would be the recovery console but I have only used it once so I'd prefer another member would guide you there.

I installed most of the other critical updates, then tried to install SP1 again and it worked, it seems to be working fine. The only thing that happens is that everytime I reboot my wallpaper is gray, unless I pick one from the list of selectable wallpapers in windows? Thats the only issue I see so far.
