WinXP Popup messages

Hello,

I've recently noticed with a few new systems that I have installed that they are getting pop up messages which seem to be coming through the messanger service built into XP. These pop up at various times without even having the programs running (or atleast I don't know they are running) unless they are running in the background.
I'm not refering to the pop up windows that open when visiting websites and such. Most of the messages seem to want you to visit websites to download software to block these types of messages.

I was wondering if anyone is familiar with this and if there is a way to stop the pop up messages without purcahsing extra software?

Sweet. Thank you very much. I was looking in that area before but I don't think I could get the disable command to come up on one of the PC's. So far I've been able to on the other ones.
