I've tried everything including setting up the netbeui (sp?) protocol on my xp machine. My XP computer simply will not network with my two Win98 computers. Does anyone else have some advice in laypersons terms?

Welcome to PCMech.
Give us some details on how you are going about it. Are you using a router? or Nic's and a Crossover cable? Are you trying to share files and folders only? or Internet also? Have you made sure they are all in the same Workgroup?

How i went about setting up my network
I'm using a dlink router. i used the xp network setup program on my two 98 machines. Let's call my XP computer, computer X, my 98 machine in the kitchen computer K, and the one in my son's room, computer R. All 3 computers are setup for the same workgroup. As it stands at this moment, no computers can communicate to each other. The other day I had a minor victory in that computer K & R could see each other. However, that did me no good because I need to transfer data from K & R to X. grrrrr. As I continue to try different things, again, I've lost even that minor victory. Let me know what other info you need. All the different setup stuff I've been trying (for weeks) is kind of a blur, but I'll try to answer any further questions that you may have. Thanks for responding.

I've managed to re-establish connectivity for the two 98 machines (K & R). I'm going to bed.

if the two are sharing one internet connection then they shoudl both be able to see each other. just look around My Network Places and it should be in one of the groups. mine on default was in workgroup.

I have a XP and WIN98 FE networked thru a router. I was not able to get it working using the floppy that XP created. I wound up setting it up on each PC manually.
First make sure that they are all in same workgroup with each having unique name. Then go to each folder or HD that you want to share and enable file and print sharing. You might have to disable any software firewalls that are running until you get the problem sorted out. I had the free version of ZA on the WIN98 PC prior to the router and second PC with XP. I wound up having to remove it from the WIN98 PC. Some here recommend installing Netbeui but I didn't. Chas

Well, I've already shared folders and it just won't see 'em. I guess I'm stuck burning what I want on CD and just transferring it over manually. Thanks anyway ya'll - and if anyone has any additional ideas, let me know... I'll keep checking here.

First, here's my set up. Don't know if it's like yours, xphelp. Motorola cable modem feeds a Netgear RP614 router. Connected to the 4 router ports are two desk top units XP Home, one Laptop running XP Home and an open port I use when downloading to computers I'm working on. The unit I am servicing right now is a windows 98se Compaq. I added a Netgear Lan card to it and configured it in 98 Network connections for LAN, automatically find ISP. Then I went to Network Neighborhood and added the name of my home netork (same as my other three). When I click on the icon for my desk top in the 98 computer's Network Neighborhood, it opens up to show all the files I have designated as Shared. Last nite I ran Ad-aware that way on the 98 and burned a cd from a music file on the XP computer using the burner on the 98 computer. I configure each computer within it's own software for gaining access to the network. Hope this helps.

Check out the info in this thread: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=70776
I had the same problem until I read the info in the link I posted at the end of the above thread. BTW, running Netbeui is NOT recommended with XP. It "can" be done, but XP does not officially support Netbeui. You only TCP/IP on the 98 machines and the XP machine.

Most common errosr commited in TCP/IP is not enabling the Netbios over TCP/IP.
