I got a PC that I’m doing up for a friend. I just installed Windows 98 SE on it, but I have no idea what brand of hardware is in the system & I therefore can’t locate the correct drivers. How would I go about finding out the brand names of the hardware in the system? Windows does tell me some of them, but is having trouble recognising some of the other devices. Plus we know Windows does not always display the correct hardware installed.

Open the case and look. Manufacturer name, product number and/or model number should be on the cards and the mainboard.

. . . and, should you be in a great hurry, or not inclined to open the case, here are a few programs that can identify a fair number of the devices (both pretty good at identifying motherboards, which is good for those "unknown devices" = usually onboard chips)
