No Windows Update 98se
I'm trying to run windows update on a friend's older Compaq Presario 5461 with 98se. I've tried all of the MS knowledge base ideas and still I can't get it to load the software to analyse the system. Message reads "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on theis page. As a result, the page may not display correctly". Got by that problem by lowering the security settings, but it won't load the update software. Anybody ever run into this before?
And please don't start an opinion poll about how you don't use update. I'm not interested in differences of opinion, just how to make it work. Thanx, Jon |

Did you check out this MS TroubleShooter for Windows Update? http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
My guess is that if you updated your Java/"Virtual Machine"/jscript files it'd work. You could also try the repair intall of IE. Or trying the IE Service Pack for your version. All of these fixes would replace the java files that are needed for Windows Update to run. One of the troubleshooter suggestions, "Manual installation instructions for Windows Update controls . . . " looks promising & quick (it looks like it would replace just the files for Windows Update) Post again if these don't help . . . Gary |

Thanx Gary, I'll check it out close in a little bit. One other thought that came to mind this afternoon is the RAM on this thing. It only has 64Mb (got 256more on order from Crucial) and only 55Mb is available cuz onboard sound uses some. Wonder if the low amount of RAM would have any effect?

Well, Gary, that didn't work either. Think I'm gonna wait til the new ram comes in and see if that helps. If not, it's running fine. Just thought updating would be best.

Got it! Kept looking on the MS sites and under the "more windows" area found the new IE6 download. Once that was installed, I could go to Windows update and it told me I needed to download a Virtual basic(?) software that was missing. Did that, rebooted and the direct connect with Win Update works great. Problem must have been in the old IE security sensitivity.
