Help with modem

Okay, here's the story. Somehow the modem on my sister's computer was uninstalled from the OS. Now we can't use it and Windows refuses to redetect it. I've tried manually installing it under the add/remove hardware applet but it's not detected and it's not on the hardware list. The computer is a older Gateway, the OS is Windows 98SE and the modem is a GVC SF-1156.

Thanks

Do you have another modem you could try? or maybe try that modem in another machine, to be sure it hasn't died on you.

The modem should be good. They were having a problem with MSN and somehow in an effort to fix the problem the modem was uninstalled. Their service with NetZero was fine though. So I thought that rules out the modem???

modems can sometmes be difficult to uninstall/reinstall.
here's what I would do:
first check in device manager to see if it's listed (right click my computer/properties/devicemanager). if it's listed, remove it by highlighting it and clicking remove.
at this point you could try rebooting and see if windows detects it. if not, recheck to see if it's still removed in device manager and shut down. unplug the power cord.
now open up the case and take the modem out of it's slot, and turn the computer back on. shut down again (unplug the power cord) and put the modem back in, start it up again. let us know if it is now detected...

Well after taking all of the steps that you described Dan, it works. Thanks for the assist. I have never had this much troble with a device being detected. The funny thing is, she wants to get online to shop for a new PC. Who says these things don't have feelings?

like I mentioned, modems are a different type of device...
glad it worked out for you...
I have a theory about pc's:
they learn what pisses you off most and when..then they do it when you least expect it!!!
