ME Laptop Install
I'm going to be installing Windows ME on a laptop and I was wondering if there is anything special that I should know about an OS install on a laptop?
The machine started its life with Windows ME. Then the drive died and a fresh install of XP home was put on. Is there anything I should know about getting rid of XP and putting ME back on? Will ME take care of all the drivers for the machine? |

No ME will probably not have all the drivers U will need especially when it comes to a laptop. Go the the manufacturers website and find your model and get the drivers there if U can. Video is almost surely one that you will need and maybe sound, and perhaps some motherboard specific ones too...

If the laptop came originally with ME, then you might not have to look for many or none of the drivers. I've noticed that some manufacturers of PC's or laptops tend to use compatible parts with the OS that the product is released with. This is not true all the time but I have ran into this when reloading some models of HP desktops using ME. I would first load the OS and then check device manager and see what did not load if that where the case. If something does not install then visit the manufacturer and get the driver at that point. My two cents.
oh, if you are using a restore CD, then you shouldn't have to look for anything. If you are using a separate copy of ME then just load it and see what happens first. Edrod13

I'm using a seperate ME CD. I know that it handles video, sound, and ethernet drivers just fine. What I was really wondering is if reformatting a laptop was the same as doing it on a desktop?
Its been a while since I installed an OS from scratch... Tell me if I miss any steps here... 1 - Make Windows ME bootdisk from other computer running Windows ME. 2 - Start computer with bootdisk, use FDISK to delete contents of drive. I forget if I need to format the drive with FDISK or if I can just stick in the ME CD and let it do the formatting. 3 - Restart machine with ME CD in drive and let it format if required and install the OS I think that is what I need to do, someone fill in the spots I missed. |

Stick the ME CD in and let it do the format. You will save yourself the trouble of making the boot disks. Like I said, once the OS is up and running check and see what did not get installed.

Ok... So the ME CD will just wipe the contents of the hard drive and then install itself?

Yes. Just follow the prompts after ME formats.
