Windows Encountered an Error Accessing the System Registry

Hi Folk

My lady installed cable modem onto a Win98 PC. Having connected both the USB and Ethernet cables (!) between the PC and external modem she started to get errors.

The most concerning is the 'Windows Encountered an Error Accessing the System Registry: windows will restart and fix the registry for you'. When you press ok it re-boots and delivers the same message.

I do not know for sure that it was the cable modem installation that caused it but it would be very coincidental if it was not. (there is an additional error that comes up asking for the installation cd to be placed in the D: drive even though installation is complete.

It is the registry error i am most concerned about though the two issues may be linked?

I have never interfered with a registry before.... Can you repair it from the WIN98 disk or is there a tool i can download to do it?

I am reluctant to re-install as i do not know for sure that she has all the drivers....

Any assistance would be appreciated

Yes U can just boot up to dos by pressing F8 right before windows begins to load, right after the BIOS load screen and U get an alternate boot choices menu like safe mode, and U just want command prompt. From C:\ type scanreg \restore
that will bring U up to a place where U should be able to choose from the registry files from the last 5 days, just pick the most recent one that is before the trouble occured, and it will promot U thru the rest of it....HTH

. . . kt's suggestions should get a working Registry back for you.

. . . but, I'm not familiar with a cable modem setup that would have both USB and ethernet connected to the PC. Seems like you would have one or the other, not both. Usually with a cable modem the coaxial cable from your wall outlet goes directly to the cable modem, and either an ethernet cable or a USB cable connects your PC to the cable modem. If you are using a router, it simply sits inbetween the cable modem & your PC (and in that situation an ethernet cable connects the cable modem to the router, while either USB or ethernet [or wireless antenna] communicates to the PC).

Are you sure the cables are setup OK?

The cable's were not supposed to both be connected - but not knowing better and not reading the manual meant that they were...

Any way - we have resolved the issue of the message asking for the install cd with the aid of technical support. Following a reboot the registry error seems to have vanished.

I am planning to leave it now unless it comes back, or unless you guys can tell me that i shouldn't.

Thanks for your help though it is usefiul to know you can restore previous versions of the registry.

As long as U leave the scanreg in the startup folder on windows under msconfig, it will do a scanreg and save the first boot of each day and will save the last 5 copies...
