What DOS commands are you typing at the command prompt?

Have you tried to boot the system from a bootable floppy and then try the DOS commands?

If this were a regular DOS error, error 3 is an invalid path to the directory for that command. There are many versions of DOS (several posts have already mentioned this) - which are you using, and are you booting anything else first.

It's been a few ages since I had to use DOS, but if the path to the directory for your DOS commands isn't correct, I would think an error such as you're seeing would be likely. If you are on a DOS only machine (are there still some out there?) - check your Path= statement.

[andy's suggestion to do a full virus scan is a good one, too - it's always a good idea when encountering strange errors]

This isn't a valid error message for any MS DOS from 3 to 8.
3 choices as I see it. Virus as Andy suggests, corrupted command.com, or some other OS.

Cricket's floppy boot test will help determine #2.
