A friend wants to upgrade Win98se to XP Pro.
Can she boot with the XP Pro cd and when it asks for existing O/S, she can insert the win98 disk and after recognizing the existing O/S, XP will continue to install? It is a XP Pro academic upgrade disk. The HDD is currently clean and ready for installation. Carl |

Yes, that's the way it's supposed to work and it works without problems so long as there's nothing wrong with the computer's hardware.
If it does encounter problems installing XP, the usual cause is RAM. Most of the time, shutting the machine down, removing the RAM modules, carefully wiping off the contacts with soft, dry, lint-free cloth and blowing or vacuuming out the slots, then reseating the RAM will fix it. |
