W2K SP 3 Question: What is it!!??

A friend of mine has what is apparently an older version of W2K. He’s trying to install Office 2000 on a new upgrade and it’s asking for his SP3 disk for W2K. He says he doesn’t have this disk. Is this a service pack of some sort that can be downloaded? I currently run XP Pro so I’m not that familiar with W2K.

Windows 2000 service packs can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000...ks/default.asp
NB: the latest service pack is SP4.

As to why Office 2K is asking for Win2KSP3, I hae no idea - typically it shouldn't be checking for service packs for Win2K. But hopefully it will work out for your friend

Personally, I'd recommend using SP3; and keeping the rest of the system update with fixes post-SP3 - then install to see if Office 2000 is running.

SP4 hasn't been out that long (only about 4-5 weeks, I think), and I have heard of some issues with SP4 on Win2k server, I don't know if it translates onto Win2k PRO. If your friend wants he can always get SP4 from the site, or if he feels that any or all of these (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813432) affect him.

PS: If he decides to go with SP4 directly, then remind him that the SP's are cumulative (SP4 contains fixes from SP1..SP3)

Statica,
One more question; he just told me he installed all the “critical updates” from the Microsoft update site: did this process install SP3, or does he need to still install SP3 as a separate install process? Will it create problems to install SP3 after he’s already installed all critical updates? TIA.

If he installed all of the critical update, SP4 would be installed. Open up any folder and click the Help About and it will show the service pack.

Are you sure that it is not asking for Office 2000 SP3?

"are you sure that it is not asking for Office 2000 SP3?"

That could be it; I'll get more info from this guy.
