Generally speaking, there is a cd to be used to upgrade win2k for example which is "different" than the cd to do a full install in a blank hard drive.

most likely they are talking about a version of which you can upgrade your current Windows OS... like from windows 98, ME, or 2000 to XP...
if you have NO operating system, then you need the FULL version of Windows XP and cannot use the upgrade version since you have no OS to upgrade... man, it sounds easy to explain in my head, so... hope it helps!

If you have a previous version of windows you can use the "XP Upgrade CD". If you do not have a previous version of windows then you need to acquire a "Full Version" of XP.
The "Upgrade version will let you do a clean and full install of XP. I think this is what cuffs007 just said. |

not important is correct; the "upgrade" version has the full version of XP on the cd, it will just look for an older version of Windows when you go to install it. You must legally own an older version of Windows to "legally" use the upgrade version. Having said that, if you own an earlier legal version, you can pop it in the cd rom drive when XP asks for proof of an earlier version and point XP to the cd rom drive; the earlier version does not have to be installed on the hard drive.

Newegg prices are
win xp home fuill version OEM 93.00 win xp prof full version OEM 143 They do not sell the regular versions or upgrade versions so I checked compusa xp home 199.99 full version or 99 for the upgrade professional is 299.00 full and 169 after rebates for the upgrade. So, buy a floppy drive or something to qualify for the OEM version and have the full version sent from newegg, this way you can lose/sell/destroy etc the old OS disk and have no problems if you need to reinstall XP because you still have a full version disk for the same cost as the upgrade. 99% you do not need the pro version Last edited by sdkfz; 07-28-2003 at 08:03 PM. |
