Activation?

I was messing around with my video card capture drivers and I installed and resinstalled them. When I uninstalled them and restarted the computer it said "there have been major changes in the hardware in you computer, you must activate windows within 3 days". I activated it and it worked. But the drivers weren't so I uninstalled them and it said I have to activate again. I tried but it said I have exeeded the number of activations aloud. I need this computer and I don't want to have to reinstall anything. Why do they have this stupid thing?! I haven't even physically changed anything!

It's called greed..you should be able to call in an activation to MS. Explain to them what happened and they can provide you with a valid activation code.

That's interesting, because it isn't consistent. I recently upgraded my Mobo and HDD, components I consider pretty major and was expecting to have problems activating XP again. After installing Windows, I proceeded to activate online (expecting a refusal) and it went straight through. What are the parameters, anyone know?

There is a period of time (120 days I believe) that MS will reset the activation per a copy.

If you have to call MS it's no big deal.

So if I had to reinstall windows within the next 120 days, I would have to call? Just interesting to know.

Thanks Jimmie.

I called the number given by Windows and the technical support person working with me by email. It says it's disconnected!! I'm down to less than a day before this computer becomes unusable. HELP!

Don't they give you the option to talk with a tech support executive?

Myself, and a friend, installed new hard drives two days ago. He was required to reactivate XP but I wasn't. Doesn't seem to be any logical reasoning with it.
