I think the only way to install the drivers properly is to go through the add printer wizard.

but before you do that remove anything that might be in there first

also do not have the printer connected when you do this.
the instructions will tell you to connect the printer

Hps are good printers and work well, but their installation procedures are fairly particular. Did you completely uninstall all previous drivers? Did you leave the USB cable unplugged before starting the installation? Take another look at all the details at this link, and see if there's anything you missed: http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/documen...8958&cat=setup

You mention browsing to a location for an .inf file = most Hps don't install easily this way. They usually prefer that nothing else is running (temporarily disable antivirus), and that you run their specialized "setup.exe" installation routine, usually from an installation CD, but it can also be run from the Start/Run box for a download by browsing to the setup.exe that you downloaded.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

[p.s. . . . just saw bailey's post: I'd agree for many other printers out there, but the USB inkjet Hps seem to install best from their specialized setup routines.]

With HP USB Printers you normally install the drivers with the printer off and unplugged. Then you shutdown the computer, plug in the printer and turn it on, then restart the computer. The printer will detect and then you complete the installation of all the other software.
And least I forget, when you turn off the computer after installing the drivers, leave the disk in the drive as it will auto run the installtion after you restart.
