MSN Messenger 6 and OE?

Hi All

Ive just downloaded the new MSN Messenger 6 from Microsoft.com...

On my previous version (4.7), when I open outlook express, it automatically opens, but doesnt sign in (as I turned this off). This is strange as I have uninstalled it from the add/remove windows components and its still there. After reading some other posts, I think loads of other people have had this kind of problem where it has been uninstalled etc and still keeps on working, so I have found a resolution for this now...

My next question is, I was wanting to install Messenger 6 onto Win XP and I installed it fine and it worked fine, the only problem was, there was no connectivity of messenger and outlook express. Usually on OE, the contact list on Messenger is shown within your contacts in the OE address book, this was not the case. I have checked the options in both OE and the new messenger, but I cant see anything that could resolve this. I dont know if this is how the new messnger is suppose to be?

The only way I can think of getting the new version to start with OE is to rename the folder and files so they are the same etc.

Any ideas as to how it is integrated and if this can be done manually?

Any help on this whole matter would be good.

Thanks

Karl

Hi All,

Im still havnig this problem. With the pre-installed version of messenger, it is installed in program files/messenger whereas the new one is installed in program files/.net messenger.

I have removed the old version by renaming the folder etc and I have tried to rename the files within messenger to resemble the oder version and call the folder the old name, this in theory worked, but Outlook would no longer open and froze, no matter what I did.

I have tried to contact Microsoft about this, so ill see what they say, but if anyone else has any ideas about this, please let me know.

Im using Win XP SP1, Outlook Express 6.0 and was using messenger 4.7 and tried to upgrade to 6.0.

One thing, previously, messenger would tell u a new version is available and would you like to upgrade, this way meant that you did not need to install anything and it would all be set up automatically... Any idea why this hasnt happened this time?

OE and XP uses Windows Messenger, an integrated annoyanc.. err.. feature. What you have downloaded is MSN Messenger an entirely different annoyance as far as XP is concerned, and it cannot be interchanged in functionality or integration to your OS. When OE starts, it will look for Windows Messenger and not MSN messenger. And on certain systems will try to run both Windows Messenger and MSN messenger side-by-side.

Ok then, thats explains it! Im guessing they are virtually the same program?

The thing is, normally messnger will come up saying that there is a new version available etc... it hasnt as yet... I guess I can hope it does...

Thanks for the reply. Karl
