Hello Everyone,
I had Win98SE installed on my new system. All was good, untill I decided to try to install a game. The game was taking a while to load, and the system froze. So, I pressed the reset button, and as I was waiting for the start up screen (Which took quite a while ot load) it would give me the options for a C:/ prompt, Safe Mode, and Normal boot. When I tried for the safe mode or the normal boot, it would only bring me back ot thaty menu...I popped in my Win98SE bootdisk, and figured I would re-format. Okay, I go to fdisk, and I delete the Partition, and then Reboot, and then try Create a new partiton. It stays at 0% for Drive Intergrity. I remove the bootdisk and see what will happen should I have no media present, and the same menu happens. I can not install Win98SE over the current install, because there is an error, in which Setup cannot Scan Drive C for errors. I'm stumped, any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks, -Joe EDIT: I Zero Filled the Hard Disk, (Using MaxBlast3 software) and now when I am going to install 98SE (Its already been formatted by MaxBlast, eliminating the Fdisk problem) It hangs when it's "Performing a Routine Check on Drive C:"... The Specs are as folllows: Asus A7N266 Mobo AMD XP 2400+ Processor Maxtor 120GB HDD Liteon CD ROM Mitsumi Floppy Kingston 256MB DDR PC2100 RAM Intergrated GeForce 2 Video, and Intergrated Sound... Sound like you got a bad hard drive. Use the Maxtor diagnostic utility to test the drive with. And try another IDE cable.

Dan, When I run fdisk I am able to delete partitions, however when I try to create them the system freezes. I can make partitions with the MaxBlast 3 software, however, when Windows is checking the system for errors before installation, the system locks up. When I try to run ScanDisk in Dos, it also locks up. Cricket, I tried using different IDE cables, and same thing. It was the Hard Drive however, as I tested it with another one, and the system works fine. All thats left is to get a replacement hard drive. Thanks :-)

Joe - when you used fdisk, did you try the newer version that was updated for hard drives larger than 60gb? That might explain why you were having trouble = if it was the earlier version. (I think they have it over at bootdisk.com on one of their download pages)
It might be a version problem with PowerMax also = I imagine you'd need a version at 3.0 or perhaps even higher to see a drive that big. Try downloading & trying the latest version of PowerMax just to see: http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/powermax.htm [this version lists as 4.06] Best of luck . . . Gary |

Thanks Gary, but the PowerMax doesn't support my hardware (I have an nVidia nForce Chipset). Maxtor says that they're making a version that will.

Hi again
What do you think about either calling Maxtor (if they have a toll-free number) or e-mailing them about returning the drive for a replacement, rather than having to wait for them to update their diagnostics? Their support folks might also have some fix or test that we're unaware of to solve the fdisk problem. They have a good reputation, I'm sure they'll be willing to offer help. . . . Gary |
