XP Error on Startup
When my computer, using XP Home, starts up, a message appears saying that Windows cannot open a file, TFTP592. I have the option of using a web service to determine a program to open the file, or choosing a program from a list, but the website proved useless and I don't want to create more problems by choosing the wrong program. Programs have been crashing since this began, and a system restore to 2 days before the problem began failed to fix it.
The problems started after the computer restarted itself for no apparent reason. A message appeared saying that the system was shutting down in 50 seconds. It said this was because of NT AUTHORITY \ SYSTEM and that RPC service terminated unexpectedly. When the computer was started back up again, the error message about the file TFTP592 appeared. Does anyone know how i can fix this? |

go to msconfig and look at your startup programs,if you find one that looks to be the offender uncheck it.

Sounds suspicious to me. You might do some homework on trojan virus's at Symantec.

Do a Dogpile search. Page is missing. But it does have something to do with virus.

When I unchecked TFTP592 in the startup tab, the error still appeared after a restart, and I found that another TFTP592 had been added to the list, and I'm sure it wasn't there before I unchecked the first one. Unchecking this second file as well didn't solve the problem, because Windows for some reason tried to start the file anyway on startup.

Time to reformat, dude! Seriously, if at all possible I would take precautions to not leave your machine online connected to an "always on" broadband connection. And if you run a home network, disconnect the culpret PC from your network physically. Better to be safe than sorry.

Hate to revive an old topic, but I'm having similar probs. I did a reformat and guess what, it happened the very first time I climbed online with the new OS. Has anyone found anything that works?

It sounds sorta like you could of gotten a virus and sometimes you can't just get rid of the virus by formating the hard drive. You need to zero the hard drive, then partition and format.

Same thing happened to my cousin and I called his cable company and they said there were a lot of viruses going around so i took out the ethernet cable and it works fine, except for the fact that he have no internet connection on his computer. They told him that the latest security updaes would resolve the problem.

Have to type fast. I'm having the same problem. Also, someone keeps scanning my ports to see if I"m using Win2K. To me it looks like it may be a memory resident virus that won't leave unless the HDD is formatted, and the BIOS flashed with the HDD disconnected. Gotta go, shutdown is coming.

Sounds like the RPC vulnerability which is flooding the net at the moment.
See here: http://microsoft.com/technet/treevie...n/MS03-026.asp and here http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=72117 and here for expert work in progress http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=72168 Some good info on it at this Forum http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthrea...5&pagenumber=1 This problem is so severe in the UK, our local branch of the big PC chain PC World, has a poster at the front of the store telling people about it. They have obviously been swamped with repairs. Many people I've spoken to have solved the problem by downloading the MS patch; however, I'm still trying to find out if that totally cleans up the problem. Down load and install the M$ patch and then get yourself a firewall, ZoneAlarm is free, and update the anti-virus program.
The patch itself will not clear the virus, an up to date AV will. |

Check this link to Computer Associates: http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/virus.aspx?ID=36265. If you have this trojan, a cleanup program is available for download.

It's just a worm that's goin around. You can get rid of it simply by going to your "run" option in the start menu. Type regedit. Then follow this root path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\RUN In that folder you'll more than likely find msblast.exe Delete it and Firewall your computer. XP offers it's own firewall that you can activate from your net connection properties. If you don't have one, go to www.zonelabs.com and download the free ZoneAlarm firewall. Once you've done that, the virus can't touch you. If you'd like you can run over www.trendmicro.com and do a free virus scan just to make sure it's off of your computer. They also have a free system cleaner if it finds anything. Good luck to all

I have a question about installing a firewall.
The last time i installed a firewall, i couldnt connect to the internet (DSL) . When i called my service provider they said to uninstall the firewall becuz they already had one running and because i installed one it was stopping my connection to them. (confusing) . I dont know much about firewalls, but im wondering if i install a firewall, will it block my connection to my service provider. thanx trin |

if you use XP's firewall there shouldn't be a prob regardless if your IP is using one also. If you buy or d/l one there should be options to let certain programs access the net. Just give the ones you want (like your web brower and your connection) access and deny the ones you don't know about
