Yep. Boot from the Windows XP CD, and somewhere at the beginning of the install process you will be able to format your partitions.

Also, if you're running XP on the machine in your signature, I suggest you add more memory. Personally, I don't like to have less than 256MB with XP.

No, you do that with the XP CD. Boot from it and Windows Setup will start. Setup has to give you the ability to create/delete partitions and to format them. Try again, you probably did something wrong.

Yeah, choose option one. You want to reinstall WinXP, you already said it.
And some screens later you will be able to partition and format.

Once you choose option 1. Setup will tell you that it will reformat your HD and then it will ask you how you want to partition it. FAT32 or NTFS, and if you have multiple partitions already setup, it will ask you which one to install it on.

Describe the problem.

If your computer isn't brand new, you might have a hard drive that may be going out.

What soundcard are you using?

What happens when you try to install the drivers? Do you get an error message?

Is there a speaker icon in the systray?

Speakers plugged in and powered up?

Is it a PCI soundcard or onboard sound?

If it is a PCI soundcard, then what make and model?

Is it a brand PC like HP or Dell - or just a clone PC?

If it is onboard, then make sure onboard sound is enabled in the BIOS.

If it is a PCI soundcard, then make sure any onboard sound (if your mobo has it) is disabled in the BIOS.

Try taking out the soundcard and inserting it back in.

Did you install mobo drivers last time you installed XP or did XP supply all the drivers - including onboard sound?

Is the soundcard listed in Device Manager, and, if so, is it flagged - conflicts - unknown devices? If it isn't listed in Device Manager, then either the Bios has not detected it or the drivers are not installed

Make sure the soundcard is properly selected as the playback device in Sound/Audio in the Control Panel.

Did XP detect your soundcard properly last time and supply it's own drivers or did you use the drivers from the soundcard CD-Rom?
