My uncle gave me a laptop that is a 366 mhz AMD K6-2 with 64 meg of ram. I tried loading win 2000 on it because it met the minimum requirements. It works but runs extremely slow. I next decided to reformat and load win 98 on it but it will not work. I tryed everything I know of. I boot with the bootable win 98 full version cd and get to the command prompt. It reads the bootable cd as the A: drive and if I switch the cd, it will become the D: drive. The problem I am getting is when I choose the C: drive it goes to the C: prompt and when I hit dir, it says invalid directory. I can't load anything on it but 2000. What do I do? Do I need to fdisk because I originally formatted it in NFTS? I also reformatted in FAT.
Note: Floppy drive does not work |

Try again, this time booting with the Win98 dsik "start computer with Cd-rom support", and from it's "A:" prompt (it's rather a 'virtual' A drive) type the command fdisk. Then try option 4 just to see what partitions are detected. If there's just one, that should be the Win2000 partition, you can then delete it. Then create a Primary Dos Partition, but don't format it just yet. Reboot, and let the Win98 disk start Setup, it should detect that the drive needs to be formatted. Let it, and when it asks to "Enable Large Hard Drive Support?" answer Yes (the drive will then be formatted using Win98's FAT32). . . . And off you go!
Best of luck . . . Gary |

I try it and it doesn't delete it. It says it does but when I exit it says write protection error on the screen and I can still boot to windows. I think I am going to try zero fill formatting. I will let you know what I find out.

Ok I did the zero fill format and it did the trick. I am installing windows right now and I will be up and running really soon. Thanks for taking your time to help me.
