Win2k BSOD

I have just built a P4 system and wanted to transfer my existing 40 gig HDD from my slow Athlon system. Prior to this there had been no problems with the system or Win2k. I just wanted a processor and mobo upgrade - The original Athlon was 1 gig and the Pentiu is 2.4 gig; RAM - well, 512 meg on each.

So - put the disk in - set as HD0 and it started up OK, but eventually halted just before the point where you type in your password. I got that denim coloured screen with a message which said that the system had been halted and if this was the first time, to restart. - the usual hex dump and telling me to look in my 'getting started booklet' I replaced the disk with an older one on which i had Win98 and that worked fine, booting up in default 16 colour mode, and asking to install all sorts of drivers - but no problem - it worked.

What puzzles me is that the Win2k disk works fine on the old system - in fact I am using it to post this question. Why should the new system not like it? The monterboards are both by Gigabyte, and I have always found them to be reliable.

The answer is probably a very simple one but I am very puzzled.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Paddy

Win2k is not like win9x in that you can swap mb / chipsets. That is why it will not boot [proprietary chipset drivers for the old board]
Since it is in your old computer now uninstall all software that is associated with your old board ie onboard sound drivers, monitoring software, etc. If it wants to reboot, do not let it.
Now put the drive in the new computer. Put your win2k cd in the cd drive [with the cd set as first boot device] restart computer. When setup starts, choose to install; setup will detect your previous installation and offer to repair the install. Let it repair your existing win2k install. Note you will have to reapply service packs, hot fixes, patches, directX updates, etc.
Just finished this procedure on my wife’s computer when I swapped mb, processor and ram [she did not want me to clean install].

I would opt for a clean install of win2k. This procedure is only for when a clean install is not possible.
