XP Home: Default drag action is copy?

Hi everyone!

I don't know exactly what has caused this, perhaps an MS update, or because I bought the version of XP Home that has SP1 already integrated.

Whenever I drag and drop something with the left mouse button, the default action that occurs when I drop the icon is a "copy," not a "move." Anytime I want to just move something, I have to use the right button. This is a pain when I'm not thinking about it and I move a ton of files, only to find out that I copied them and have to wait for my hard disk to do it's whirly-grindy until it's finished.

I've never seen this happen before! I've used other copies of XP on different computers, including my older one, and it wasn't this way. I don't think I've accidentally switched it on or anything. I have XP TweakUI if that's of any interest (it seems relevant) but I can't find a setting for any such thing anywhere, including TweakUI.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

NW

If you are draging to a different drive the default action will be Copy and not Move. If the new location is on the same drive the default should be Move.

If you drag an executable file the default action is to create a shortcut.

Jack, you hit it right on the nose. This was the first time I have ever partitioned a drive between Windows and the rest of my data, and a lot of my dragging and dropping occurs between the desktop and My Documents, which I relocated to the other partition. Thank you1

Just glad to help

One other thing when you are dragging a file if the action is going to be Copy a little white square w/ a plus sign in it will appear if you keep the button held down. For a Shortcuts shortcut arrow will appear. And when you're Moving nothing extra appears. So if you ever aren't sure what you're doing on a drag you can just take a sec and look closely before you let go.
