xp transfer problem

I have a new computer with XP. My old computer is 98. The are files on my old system I want on the new one, so I burned a cd with the files on it.

When cd's are burned all files are saved read-only.

In 98, when the files are loaded to the hard drive, I go to file properties and uncheck read-only and the file works.

However, when I load the files to the hard drive on my XP computer, and I go to properties, the read-only is unchecked already. I think it is still read-only.

I tried to check read-only and apply, then uncheck read-only and it still doesn't work.

WordPad files, when opened are blank. MS Word and Excel files are filled with little boxes where the letters should be.

Zipped files can't be unzipped. WinZip is one of the files that is Zipped.

The other files are .exe install files (Juno, directX, etc.). When I try to open them, the dos window pops up for an instant, then disappears.

Does anyone know what the problem is and how I can fix it?

Thanks

Have you tried using the built in "Files & Settings" transfer wizard in XP ? It worked good for me.
