Talking How bad is this?

Ok have a computer running windows me was having (ok still have the problem) with it recognizing the floppy. Worked on it a few hours and never resolved it. Turned it off and didn't think about it. Turned it on to get some files off of it and get the message Windows has detected a registry/configuration error. Select safe mode I get the safe mode screen mouse and nothing else. No tool bar do ctl alt del and nothing is running. Tried a step by step and it crashes when I select load windows drivers. Any ideas on what the problem might be and the best way to resolve it? It says to run scanreg, but can't do that because pc thinks it has no floppy. Can I copy the files from the boot disk to a cd and try to boot off the cd in the computer? Can I put the hard drive in my primary computer as a slave and back up the files off of it? Basically looking for any suggestions or help you can give me. Thanks

You could boot from your WinME CD and do a repair install... When booting from the CD... boot to a command prompt with CD support... switch to your CD drive and run the command

SETUP /P F

NOTE: you must have the spaces for it to work right.

clarifications

Ok do I need to change the bios settings to boot off the cd drive? And will it affect any data on the hard drive? Pardon my ignorance.

Yes. Restart your computer and go into BIOS and change the first boot device to the CD-ROM drive.

If you do the repair? No, your data should be safe.
