missing desktop! help!

my pc was running INCREDIBLY slowly so I decided to boot my pc back up, but when it did all I got was a blue screen where my desktop should have been and could only access the task manager by press alt+control+delete and then I could access all my old desktop files (for instance internet explorer) but couldn't put them back on the desktop, I don't even have a start menu anymore!!!HELP!!!

What kind of PC is this...home built or store bought? What OS? What are the system specs?

What did you do prior to the system running so slowly?

Find out what brand your hard drive is and go to the manufacturer's website and download the hard drive diagnostic utilities and test the hard drive out. Sounds like it could be developing bad clusters.
