Pissed Computer doesn't shut off automatically...

...and it used to!

I installed Windows 2000 Advanced Server with SP3 and now, every time I turn it off the message "it's now safe to turn off your computer" appears and I have to hit the PWR button to turn it of.

This computer had previously Linux and Windows 98FE before the former and it shut off automatically since the mobo is ATX.

Computer is the one described in this thread.

TIA

Go to device manager and check under computer; see if it is an acpi compliant computer. If it is then enable apm in power management.

If it says standard pc, then click view in device manager and have it show you hidden devices. See if nt legacy apm is installed [it defaults to do not use] tell it to use this device. If it is not installed then you will need to install it and enable.

Where exactly is NT legacy APM?

I cannot find it.

If it's missing, how do I install it?

If it lists a standard pc under computer is device manager and you do not show nt legacy apm under device manager, you will need to install it.
When you checked device manager did you go to view>show hidden devices? This is where you will find nt legacy apm. By default it is disabled.
It can be installed from add / remove hardware> add device > choose from the list.

Yup, Roger, it's enabled.

Crjdriver, yes, I set it to show hidden devices.

I went to Add/Rmv hardware > Add device and selected Add New Device. Clicked Next, selected Select a Device from the list, but in that list no NT legacy APM appears.

I did it and the system got so messed up by it. It kept rebooting itself when the black screen with the white line and the message "Press F8 for advanced startup options" appeared, in an eternal loop. I couldn't enter Windows not even in safe mode or command line.

I had to reinstall and yes, the problem persists.

I think I'll just let it be. Let my mom hit the pwr button everytime she turns it off.

Thank you for your help anyway.

Sorry it did not work for you. If it is using a standard hal instead of apci compliant, then I would think that the bios does not meet specs for acpi. Perhaps there is a bios update to correct the problem.

For my computer I'm out of luck. Diamond Multimedia went out of biz a long time ago and no more BIOS updates for my C400 mobo.

What puzzles me is that in the BIOS it says it supports power management and the computer turned itself off automatically when it had W98FE installed.

@ Thomas: could you provide your system specs so we can help you better?

Win2k has higher requirements for acpi than win9x. During setup the bios is "evaluated" if it is not up to win2ks' requirements then the standard hal is loaded. I have never loaded advanced server onto a computer that did not meet the acpi requirements so I do not know why nt legacy / apm does not appear.

That must be it then. Alas, I'll have to live with it.

Thank you very much for your help, crjdriver.

See quote above about enabling nt / legacy apm. It will work in xp as well. You do need to check and see if acpi is disabled in the bios.
