There are many "recovery" progams available. Search this site and the internet for "recovery."

Best NOT to use the pc till you get the recovery program.

. . . and if it happens that it's just system files you accidentally deleted, check to see if you have a copy of your operating system on your hard drive. In Windows Explorer (Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Windows Explorer) look to see if you can find C:/Windows/Options/Cabs. Many system builders place a copy of the operating system files there. If you wish to restore missing files from there you can use System File Checker (Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information - from the "Tools" menu, select System File Checker). You can choose to "extract one file from disk" (if you know exactly what file you need), or you can run the program and have it scan for missing files.

If the files are all from one area, such as DirectX, IE, Media Player, etc . . . you can replace these fairly easily by downloading from microsoft.com's download pages or from Windows Update. This method has the advantage of giving you more recent file versions.
. . . Gary

[p.s. you mention some of the files went to the Recycle Bin . . . if that hasn't been "emptied", you can restore the files from there. Simply open the Recycle Bin and see if anything's in there.]

[. . . and one more place you can download win98 patches from, if you want to try just a particular few without searching around all day http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/updates/ ]
