Additional RAM not recognised
I think this is a Windows 98 problem. Have just installed an extra strip of 256MB SDRAM PC133 on Dell PII 450Mhz Intel 440BX 100 Mhz (it has one strp of 128MB standard).
It seems that the BIOS recognises OK but before Windows fully loads I get the message: While Initializing device VPICD: Windows protection error. I tried removing the existing strip and just putting in the new 256MB to see the result but the system would not start. Is there anyway I can get this additional memory to be recognised in Win 98SE?

Seems like the 256M stick is bad. WIN98 boots fine with 256M without any alterations. Only above 512 do you need to change the VCHACE.

Try the Memory Configurator at Crucial.com or Kingston.com and see what they recommend for added memory. Often times propeitary boxes (Gateway, Dell, etc.) won't accept off-the-shelf RAM. I had the same problem recently with a Compaq. Ordered the Crucial for less money and it worked fine.

Some boards are picky about the RAM. While PC133 is GENERALLY backwards compatible with PC100 and PC66, it's not always the case.
I once had an FIC 503+ motherboard, running a K6-2 450 MHz. The FSB of the processor was 100 MHz. This board was designed to allow for asynchronous RAM. It would use old EDO RAM, PC66, and PC100 RAM. I tried to run it with PC133. TILT! I always got Windows Protection errors. It drove me nuts until I found the problem. It didn't like PC133. I could have run the thing on EDO RAM, but not PC133! |

Sorry I'm answering a bit late, but it's always nice to know:
If that Dell was the Dimension XPS R series PII 450 with the Intel BX chipset board, I think it has 3 slots for PC100 memory. The system maximum is 384mb, and the maximum module size on that board is 128mb. [It's not a limitation of the chipset, but the board itself. Some BX boards can handle 256mb sticks.] . . . so an upgrade with 2 128mb PC100 non-parity sticks should do OK, and put the system at it's maximum upgradable memory. . . . Gary |
