Having made almost no headway with RH9, I'm looking to use win2000 server ed. as an alternative.
What are some of the shortcommings of this O/S and how easy is it to set up a web server? Also, what programs come preloaded? (ie - mail server) [edit]: typo

I don't know that the install is any easier. It comes with IIs 5, which is easy to setup and administer. The problem is that it is easy for others to setup and administer it for you without your permission. It doesn't come with a mail server, you would have to be Exchange 2000 separately. It does come with Active Directory, IIs, DHCP server and WINS. You can get Windows 2000 Server SBS that comes with Exchange, SQL Server 2000 and Windows 2000 Server.
RedHat makes for an easy install but has it's shortcomings. I don't like the fact that it ships with Apache 2.0. Setting up an Apache server is not all that difficult. There are hundreds of howto's on the Internet. I never let the OS install it during setup. I always download it, MySQL, PHP, zlib and others and compile it the way that I want. |

I've been toying with RH9 for a few weeks and haven't really been getting anywhere. I've just been getting more and more frustrated with it. I've posted at a few linux forums, but all I seem to get is "read a manual". Well, yeah, That's what I've been doing. Although it has helped with some of the general stuff, I'm totally lost when it comes to following the instructions on how to set up a web server.

It is actually pretty easy to do. All of your apache settings are in one file httpd.conf . The harder part is often times setting up your network, compiling and configuring Apache, MySQL and PHP. I never install Apache, PHP or MySQL when I am installing the OS. Instead I go out and get the source files and compile them.
What is stumping you on the RH web server? |

lol, just about everything. I have no idea where to begin.
It's a fresh installation with most of the packages installed. |

See? No matter where I ask about setting up a web server, I either get no replies or someone saying "go read a manual".
![]() I'm going to forget about RH9, at least for a while. I just blew away the workstation I had it on and am putting 2k back on it.
