display tweaks for minmal system?

I know I'm at the barest possible settings to be running XP pro but it was either that or Win95, all I have handy right now. My problem is that the display looks like crap, the colors and patterns are messed up and/or missing. I can't set my screen resolution to higher than 640x480 pixels or the color quality higher than 4 bit.

Any suggestions on making this look better without having to upgrade hardware? I'm moving across the country in 5 days and I won't have money to upgrade for a month or two and I need to have the system working as well as I can before I go so I don't have to worry about it when I get out there.

What You Need to Use Windows XP Professional:

What I have:

* Intel Pentium II with 348 megahertz processor * 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM * 1.19 gigabytes (GB) on disk 0 (system)(C:) and 1.51 gigabytes (GB) on disk 1 (E:), with the possibility of swapping the smaller hd for a 2.1 GB disk. * unsure of video adapter and monitor ??? * CD-ROM drive * Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
