Windows ME and vmm32.vxd

I've a problem with a computer using Windows ME.

The computer won't load up Windows either normally or in Safe Mode.

When starting up the following message appears:

there is a missing or corrupt file c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd

This has only happened since the owner loaded a game in the CD-Rom drive. After that this prob has started.

I've tried using a bootdisk and in "minimal start up" using scanreg/restore and fix and scandisk and there are no faults. Then when the bootdisk is removed and reboot....the same appears.

Also can't swap the floppy drive to C drive to start up with Windows ME disk either.

Can anyone help please

That suggests a hardware problem. Are you sure the CD-ROM drive is working? Is the drive jumpered correctly? Is the IDE connected correctly?

Try replacing the IDE cable.

Try that CD-ROM drive in another computer.

Everything was working fine until a game was played via the CD drive.
