Windows 2000 Server -- same login, multiple pcs?

I've got Windows 2000 Server running on 2 computers. I'm trying to figure out how to have one login profile I can access from both machines but I have not been able to set this up. Do I need to setup Active Directory?

I understand this may be a non-trivial task but if someone could at least give me a general overview that would help direct my research.

Also, is there a way to not be queried for a password when accessing either machine over LAN from my PC running XP Pro?
