Can's stop System Restart on every boot-up!!!
Every time I start up my computer I get a window that pops up and says it has to restart. It says this restart was "Initiazlized by NT Authority\System." Then it says "Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly."
It does this every time I start up the computer. It will count down 60 seconds, and then restart. Over and over again. What can I do to fix this? Thanks so much!

I think I know the answer, but... are you connected to a server? or have you made any updates/changes to your XP operating system (like adding service pack 1 [SP1])?
edit: actually, see http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=72117 Last edited by cuffs007; 08-11-2003 at 05:30 PM. |

I'm not on a server. Just my home computer. I have not downloaded any service packs, and tend to ignore the windows update messages. I suppose I should start paying attention.
I followed the link you provided, and will try to download the service pack that addresses the RPC. It's just that the computer only gives me about 60 seconds to do anything. So it's tricky to open IE, get to a page and download something in 60 seconds. Also, I don't know of a firewall on my computer. I only have Norton Antivirus. I also have a Netgear router and a cable modem from Comcast. How do I know if I have a firewall and how can I access port 135? Also, is there any way I can buy some time before I get the reboot message? Is there a safe mode I can run where I can still go online and download? I only have 60 seconds to work with every time... |

perhaps have a friend download the microsoft update to disk (or burn it to cd) and you can install it from there... i'd try that first...
check your Netgear routers manual and see if they provide a firewall... some routers do, some don't... what model is the Netgear? as for blocking port 135, i am not sure, but i know someone will help us with that soon... i did find http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;300083 , but i'm still learning about this as you are... watch the thread i posted earlier for more info and possible solutions... |

Thank you for your help. I was able to block the exploit using a firewall I downloaded from Sygate.

Staying in windows
I am having the same problem and i found that hitting f6 when your booting up and going into safe mode with networking and signing on as the administrator will alow you to stay on. I have been on for 10 minutes without it asking me to restart. It has given me enough time to download both the fix and the service patch and install both of them. But if that still does not work for you try what the other guy said about getting a friend to download it for you and put it on a disk or something. Good luck

My cousin had that problem. To fix it just get the security updates for Windows.

Yeah I had this problem right after I built my new computer last weekend too, it can be disorienting to have someone messing with your computer when you just installed WinXP. I know I for one expected that I wouldn't have to worry about viruses, worms, and trojan horses and all that until after I got set up and started opening emails and downloading stuff... I ended up solving the problem (don't remember how unfortunately just kinda figured something out)
I'm guessing these people that did this were thinking like this guy that made the blaster worm, thinking that they could hurt Microsoft or convince them to make more secure products, but in the end it just ends up causing grief for the general public who just wants to use their computers in peace... If you people out there who consider yourselves l33t or whatever want to mess with big corporate enterprise or whatever fine but it would be nice if you could leave the rest of us out of your little vendettas... I know Microsoft has more holes in its security then a sieve, but unfortuantely it's one of the most supported operating systems by other software companies so I use it...people that try to make a statement against Microsoft this way don't change any of Microsoft's policies and don't get other companies to support other operating systems, they just cause headaches for the rest of us... Sorry about the rant, I have nothing against the benevolent hackers or hacking community (or whatever term they wish to use, I'm not l33t or anything and am not going to try to pretend I am at this point) but these people writing malicious code are a pain in everyone's neck... end of ranting! Have a nice day. |

when it starts to give you the countdown, go to start>run and type "shutdown /a" without the quotation marks..
this will stop the shutdown procedure. |
