how to recover installed programs

I recently wrecked my win98 computer while installing a program. It was something from download.com, unfortunately I don't remember what it was called. Anyways after I rebooted Explorer wouldn't load and it told me to reinstall Windows (some .dll was linked to another missing .dll, but I don't remember the names). So I go to reinstall 98 over the old copy, but halfway through the installation it gives me the same error. So I'm stuck.

I need to get all the data off of that drive so that I can format and install a fresh copy of Windows. The only problem is that I don't want to have to reinstall every single program that I already had. Is there any way to save the program files, and then copy them back to windows, but register them all properly (file types, etc.) I don't know of a way to do this but if there is it would be very helpful.

It's called ghosting/disk imaging. But you have to have it created BEFORE your computer goes wacky!

Seems odd that Win98 won't re-install over itself.

What error message is it giving exactly?

David.

Thanks Ray, I figured that much

An "error starting program" dialog appeared:

The MSVCRT.DLL file is linked to missing export NTDLL.DLL:RtlGetNtVersionNumbers.

This occured once the desktop appeared on startup, then again about halfway through installation.

Now it seems the system is wrecked more because setup stopped halfway through.

Andy's link to the article on the msvcrt file might do the trick: there are quite a few people who get this error. It usually works.

In some cases it doesn't: If you still have trouble after replacing that file, take a look at this thread, especially the portion where the wmploc files are mentioned http://www.computing.net/windowsme/w...rum/37326.html . . . this strategy (deleting the wmploc.dll and wmploc.00x files and reattempting the reinstall) seems most successful with WinMe. (but it shouldn't hurt to try on Win98 - besides, you're reinstalling anyway . . the files in question are from Windows Media Player)
