I suddenly noticed that I cannot move the icons in my desktop or create shortcuts by dragging the items in the Start Menu.
I cannot drag and drop! Not even in Windows Explorer! Help me!! OS is Windows 2000 Advanced Server.

Another annoying thing:
When I opened Word a message popped up:
Cannot register this document. Links with other documents from this document cannot be created. ***! |

It is possible to configure NT based op sys to auto arrange the icons, which means you cannot manually move them. To turn off this feature, right click on the desktop (anywhere where there is not a window), Arrange Icons, and unselect auto-arrange.

Heya, Andy.
Thx for the quick reply. The auto-arrange feature is already disabled. I'll check those links as soon as I get home, since the problematic computer is there. Will keep ya posted. |

This is way strange: the problems disappeared next time I turned on the machine.

Found out the cause, it was that infamous new virus: Blaster.
AVG took care of it nicely and I already downloaded the security patch from M$. Thanks for the replies. All is well again in Nukem Town. |

Those did not sound like the symptoms of the msblast worm. You mean the computer did not shut down on you after giving you some wierd message?

True.
I got no warning or funny messages, but according to what I read in a spanish forum the symptoms coincided with another user's who had to get rid of the worm. That got me suspicious and I went to the AVG AV web site. In the meanwhile I started AVG and did a thorough check of my system. AVG found the virus, which is also called Worm/Lovsan, and got rid of it. After finishing the scan I ran to the M$ website and d/led and installed the security patch. It is strange that my computer got hit even with a firewall installed and running. Altho it could have been my stupidity at work, I remember that all was fine, then I opened IE and got a message from the firewall stating that a DLLs service wanted to access and me, the idiot, hit OK. The computer started to act as I described in my first post in a matter of seconds. From what I read, this virus uses the Windows TFTP service. This makes me wonder: Would disabling that service prevent this worm from striking? |
