HP Pavillion laptop, startup probs

Hi a friend asked me to look at their computer, it has winXP home and when it's turned on it loads all the way up to the welcome screen ten freezes theres no HDD activity or anything.
I tried using partition magic to resize and create a second partition to backup data before i reisnstalled XP but it came up with a partition mounting error, i then tried chkdsk it found errors and now i don't know what to do.
Any help will be greatly appreciated, if you need any more information please let me know btw appoligies for the lengthy message!!

did you let chkdisk fix the errors ?
we nead to determin if the problam is hardware or software when check disk has finished fixing the hard drive boot from a windows xpcd and at the first screan select the setup option then on the next screan select repair and see if it fixes this will do an over the top install of windows if it freezes then it most likley a hardware problam and as its a laptop will need to go to a shop to be fixed as geting spair parts for laptops is hard
