Got it all lined out finally

For some of you without an additional firewall protection, this may help out some. Make sure the XP firewall on your Internet connection is enabled. This did allow me to be able to download the latest dat. files for my anti-virus and now I am able to successfully download the updates from the windows update page.

To enable the firewall go to start, settings, control panel, network connections, and right click on your internet connection for your ISP. Click on properties, then the advance tab and make sure there is a check mark in the Internet Connection Firewall.

Hope that this helps some.

xp firewall does not stop outgoing activity, therefore on the net it is useless, you download somewhere and never know what you end up with.

I disagree. The XP firewall is pretty good. True it does not block outgoing but if someone like myself regularly runs AdAware and Spybot I don't have a lot of concern with outgoing. It does a good job of inbound where the real problem exist. One only has to turn on the XP firewall and go to www.grc.com and run the ports and shield test for confirmination that it is shielding your PC from the net.

Of course it isn't really needed if one is in back of a good hardware firewall that is provided by a router. But for the single PC user behind a cable or DSL modem, the XP firewall is sufficient.
