Hello Everyone,
Every so often (Like 20-30mins) my computer speeds up.(I.e. the little smiley faces near the threads move very fast, the typing curor blinks fast, and my typing looks like this: lllllliiiiiiiiikkkkkkkeeee ttttttthhhhhhhiiiiiiiiissssssss......) When my Pc starts, it's resources are at 88%, after browing the net for a few minutes, its 74%, and when it speeds up, it's 64%. The progs in the background are PcCillin, Sceduler, nVidia Media Center, and Media Mixer. Any help is appreciated, Thanks, -Joe |

If you try andy's idea, and the system still behaves strangely at those intervals, probably ought to scan for spyware, etc. [you've probably heard of them all by now, there's a long list over at spywareinfo.com. Most popular seem to be Search & Destroy and AdAware.]
Check in Scheduler, too - see what you have lined up. When you open Task Scheduler, the main box will show the list of scheduled events. MS Automatic Updates checks home every 5 minutes by default, you can either uninstall it, or change the interval http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/troub-312.shtml Let's hope for "benign" activity! . . . Thanks Guys;
After testing, I concluded that it was my nVidia Desktop Manager that was running in the background that was speed ing the system up. (There was a feasture to speed up maximizing and minimizing windows, and pop up menus.) In the task sceduler the only things there were Maintanence and Windows Update. Thankfully there was no virus or spyware on the system. Again, Thanks for your help. -Joe |
