When I run disk cleanup on winxp home it never finishes, Ive had it on for about 20 minutes now and its been at Comrpess Old Files the whole time and hasn't moved at all.

Does anyone know whats causing this?

Do a Google search for a freeware program called Eraser, it has a really good free space wipe option.

The thing with the built in MS Utilities is that it may be working right, but it is slow as honey on a winter day. The older MS defrag utility would take upto 8 hours on a 20 gig drive.

I use iISystem Wiper to clean out temporary files and web files. You can find it at webattack.com in the freeware section. For secure file erasing, Eraser is good. Another is Ultrawipe also found at webattack.com.

XP has CheckDisk instead of Scandisk. It does the same thing.

So to keep your HD in tip-top shape, you should run CheckDisk,
Cleanup, and then Defrag.

XP Defrag is a cut-down version of Diskeeper. If your XP defrags are taking too long, then you should consider using Diskeeper Lite, or even better, Diskeeper Pro

The CheckDisk and DiskDefrag work fine... Disk Cleanup stops at 3 notches and then doesn't go anywhere else. Im gonna start disk cleaup and leave it on for about 1 hour and see what happens.

When you go to the disk cleanup ,go thru the list and uncheck compress old files,if its checked then it will take alot longer to cleanup.

I realize this in an old thread; but I just came across a possible solution at this link: http://aumha.org/regfiles.htm. Scroll down to "Repair Disk Cleanup".

Glad it's working again. Looks like some other folks have had the same problem since there is a "fix" for it.
