Angry Java script works but java applets won't

I've read every post in the entire site that had the word java in them and the more I read the more confused I got! I've tried just about everything anyone here suggested and still can't get the applets to load.

I'm sorry if I'm going to give you all too much info but I want to make sure I give enough so someone can help me.

I have Windows XP home version. I use both the Opera browser and the IE browser. Just like others who have posted with this problem ...everything was working ok and for some reason I haven't figured out yet the Java isn't working in either browser.

I play the games on the pogo.com site...the games that are on the site work and from what I can tell those are the "Javascript" one...like the slots, and cards etc. When I try to play the games that are from the EA part of the site like Tube runner, and overflow..evidently they are applets and they won't work.

Like someone suggested in another post I went to the java sun site and downloaded the latest version:
Java 2 runtime environment edition SE1.4.2

Before I did this I uninstalled the other java version and even used the regcleaner to get it out of the registry.

For the IE browser:
IE Browser is 6.0.2800.1106 xpsp2 with the SP1 update version.
For internet Options in the Advanced section I have Java (Sun) box checked
and have unchecked all of the Microsoft VM boxes.

In the security settings for Scripting of Java I have the radio box "Enable"
checked

For Microsoft VM in this section with the "Java Permissions" High safety was
checked but I checked low safety.

I have the radio box for "disable script bugging checked and the one for displaying script errors
unchecked.

I also deleted files and history in the browser.

The errors I'm getting are:
the first box pops up with info
Proxy Config. No Proxy

Box pops up saying:
General Exception:
java.lang.nullpointerException

Down on the status bar it says:" Java Applet loading
but Java console continues to say "ping at sun then gives date and time

Red X in box for game

In the java plug in console the Broswer is checked for internet explorer. The proxy and certificates sections are blank.
And in the advanced tab it says Java runtime enviorment is
JRE 1.4.2

Since all this is so long I won't include all the info for the Opera broswer-

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Should I put info in for "proxy" not that I know what that is. Oh...I also turned my firewall off even though it worked fine with it a few days ago.

I even tried to uninstall the SP1 update for the browser and let someone else who posted can't find it and I also tried downloaded it again and tried to reinstall it and it said it can't because I have a newer verison of the browser installed.

I know there are other things I've tried but I can't remember them right now.

Other than using the cd to restore the computer is there any other way to get it working?

Hi Lexi !
Personaly, I don,t know much about Java. Now , this is what I heard. I would say that this has about 10 % chance of helping , but what do I know.----------Don
That means Java applets won't run in Windows XP's Internet Explorer if IE's security settings are set to "high."

Did you try another Java site? receiving the "java.lang.nullpointerException" message means that the JRE is running.

Hi Donald
Thank you for responding. I tried your suggestion...I went to the Internet Options and set both Security and Privacy to low.

Then I tried to load the applet and it still didn't work...but it did give me a new error message-- it said, "Netscape.javascript.JS Exception.unknown name"
No idea what it means..i don't have netscape installed so i don't know why that name came up.

Thank you again- who knows maybe if i try enough stuff i'll get it to work.

Hi aym_7

I'm not quite sure what you mean about trying another site...do you mean try to down load from someplace other than sun java?
Or did you mean another game site that uses java applets?

If you mean the later, I do know of any other games sites to try...pogo is the only one I've ever used. If you know of one for me to try I would appreciate the addy

Edited to add that I went to the Yahoo game site and tried the game Glinx...it used an applet and it load just fine.

Aym_7, do you have any idea why it works there and not at pogo?

Thank you so much for suggesting I try another web site...all the things I've tried for the last 2 days and that never entered my mind! duh!!

Thank you for the link and that loaded fine too. So I guess the problem is with the pogo site. I went through all their suggestions and nothing worked so I will email them and see what they have to say.

thank you again (looks like we were replying at the same time)

aym_7, I'm so sorry...

I didn't realize you had responded again.
If you are still willing to try the java games to see if they play for you I would really appreciate it.

I still can't get them to work and the tech support at pogo keep telling me to reinstall the java2 --- glad I didn't buy a memebership with them and just stuck to the free games!

This is the link for the games that pogo send you to to play them:
http://www.eagames.com/free/home.jsp

The two games are Tube Runner and Overflow...if you scroll down a bit they are in the middle of the screen.

I'm curious if you will be able to load them as I'm still just getting the gray box with the red x in it.

Hi lexi I'm sorry for the delay, I've been away for a while...
I think I should have replied to my post instead of editing, this is the reason you didn't notice that I responded.
I tried the link, but when I click on the game's name I get an error message saying that the address wasn't found, and that i should close my browser window, open it again and visit the page, I tried that and got the same error message

Hi Aym_7

I just tried the link and it worked....maybe you could try pasting the link in your browser.
I've all but given up on trying to figure this out.
It has to be the site's prob cuz other games load both on that site and other sites.

I'm still in the process of the email help with the techs at Pogo.com....My first email to them for help included everything I've tried and they sent me 4 emails suggesting I try them all again...honestly I don't think they read the darn emails!
You think since they want money from you to join their clubs they would at least have tech support that actually helps!
Thanks again for your time.

Hi lexi, even if I copy and paste, I still get the error message
I noticed a "login" button on the site, does the site require registration?

Hi again aym_7,

You've been so wonderful to keep trying but I've really given up on the site and its games.

But to answer your question about registration as far as I know you don't have to register to play ...you can play as a "guest". I am registered at pogo.com which has the EA games on its site.

But please don't bother with it anymore, I finally sent an email to pogo and told them they lost out on a paying membership if they can't hire tech support that can actually help.

I sent them a copy of every error message from the java console awhile back and still haven't heard from them.
Thank you very much again for trying
