New user here so bear with me please!
I just tried to install windows xp. During installation I got a bootvid.dll unable to load message. It did tell me that XP may not load properly without this file (but I tried it anyway). It didn't load and told me DLL's for kernel missing, I removed it and went back to ME. When uninstalling I got a virus activity message that said c:\windows\setup\migisol.exe attempt to write to the boot record of drive c. I then decided to run Norton Anti-Virus 2003 but when I tried to run it only half of the picture comes up and nothing will run. I've tried to uninstall and re-install and the same thing happens. I now also get failure to load windows updates. I have no idea where to go here folks and your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

You may have a virus because bootvid.dll is not operating, the computer cannot display bit-mapped graphics during the boot process,I think theres a virus that changes the bootvid.dll .If you can get the most updated antivirus defs and try and run it ,I have seen on this message board F-Prot I think is a good antivirus that you can run from floppy.also you can try to download the bootvid.dll from a site and try to replace yours.
Heres a site that may help. http://dll.yaroslavl.ru/index.php3?lng=rus&in_char=B
