In the security policies snap-in. Local computer policy\user configuration\administrative templates\windows components\windows explorer. Enable "Hide these specific drives in My Computer".

The option allows you to select the drives to hide.

However, if someone knows what they are doing they will find a drive even if you hide it unless you have a very good password and they don't open the cover on the machine. You can also hide existing partitions on harddrives without hiding the whole drive too. However, if someone really knows their stuff it won't matter.

Very true. Hiding a drive will only hide it. Even if the start\run command and windows explorer is disabled all one has to do is fire up IE and type X:\ in the url window. (X being the drive letter)

However, setting security, denies to certain users for example, will help.

Along the same line, in Win XP, is there any way to password protect specific folders?

In XP You can also go to Disk manager right click the drive>Properties>Enable/Disable this device.
Enable makes it appear.
Disable makes it disappear.

Right click my computer>properties>Hardware tab>decive manager
Also start>control>admin tools>Computer management>Device manager
Or you can right click any drive that's showing in my computer>properties>Hardware tab>select the device you want to enable/disable>properties button>Enable/disable this device

Actually, I like to know this also. From what I understand there is a way to password protect folder/files.

I've learned how to do permissions, take ownership, exclude everybody else, etc
But I haven't figured out the password part.

I kinda like the "Access Denied" popup.
But I'd still like to know how to do the passwords.

in xp if you right click the folder goto properties shairing and tick make this folder private then give your self a log on password you can only accees the folder from your desktop logon if another user logs on and uses explorer thay cant open your folder. note an adminastrator can change your password and log on to your desktop to view the file so its best to just have one admin account

Ok, but my problem with that is:

I've read and tried that before, and just now again. I don't get/see a "Make folder private" option, or any way to create a login for it.

Basically, the options that I get are:

"Do not share this folder"--which closes all others options
or
"Share this folder"--which then offers:
"Share name"
"Comment"
"User limit"
"Permissions"
"Cacheing"

I know how to change the permissions to just simply deny access, but I can't figure out the password part.

Got a step by step road map?

This is for XP Pro.
