in windows explorer, right click on the folder and select security, and do what ever you want to protect it.

Yes, you MUST have NTFS to have local security. If you have Fat you will not be able to do it.

I've been using a free app called File2File (Google it) to protect senstive files on FAT32 drives. It's worked well so far.

Right click your drive and select properties.

Open windows explorer: Go to Tools > Folder Options > In advanced settings, scroll to the bottom and you should see a setting for Use simple sharing - uncheck it.
Now go to the folder you want to protect and right click on it and select sharing and security Go to the SECURITY tab To make it readable only by you - you should add your name in the group/ usernames and give yourself full control. Then add a user 'Everyone' and deny all to it. |

I’ve been following along this thread with great interest, as this was something I wanted to learn. (If this should be a new thread, please say so, and I’ll re-post as such)
I tried the steps above, and in Statica’s attachment. Then I created a dummy account to test it. As advertised, I could not get into my locked out test folder. I then deleted the dummy user account, rebooted, and went to delete my test folder, and voila, I’m the admin and I’m locked out!! I can not view or delete the folder, nor change the folder options I set. ![]() Any ideas?? Thanks TwoRails |

You should be able to take ownership of a folder/file. The button for security, look around that area and see if you see one about ownership.

I had always to log on in safe mode as Admin to be able to protect files and folders. Gonna try that tomorrow. Thx Statica.

Please verify the following - Go to Tools > Sharing and Security and click on the Security tab You should see the following information - (figure1) - notice the user S-1-5-21-...... that is the remanant of a user that I deleted. Click the Advanced button and go to the Owner tab: (figure2) As you can see the deleted user owns the folder - so select Administrators from the list below and Check mark the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects click APPLY As of now, administrators (or whichever user you want owns the folder/subfolders/files). To remove the user entirely from rights to the object you can proceed with the following: Click on the Permissions tab - figure 3 Select the S-1-5... user Uncheck the Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply ..... box Click COPY from the subsequent dialogue box Then click the Apply button Once you have removed the inherited permissions you can now select the old user and Click the REMOVE button to remove traces of the older user's access Click OK to get out of the advanced security settings tab Now the Properties (Security) screen will not have the old user listed on it. Hope this helps. |

Worked like a charm, Statica.
Why did M$ had to hide all those useful features from us users? In Windows 2000 they are already available without too much fuss. |
