Since about Saturday (8/23/03) around 9am I have been attempting to connect to Microsoft Windows Update. I just did a clean install of XP and I wanted to acquire the necessary updates. The update initiates, it scans, it lists the necessary updates. It's slick. However, when I select the option to download and install the updates, it stalls and tells me me the network is busy or it gives me this error number 0x80190198. I've tried searching the knowledge base and can't find a solution. Other people can access it fine. In fact, I can access it here at work....but not a home? What's the deal? I tried working with my ISP, they thought maybe it was a virus. Guess what was the first thing they recommended to me? To update my computer at microsoft.com! Argh!
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, -Bronson 800 Mhz AMD Duron 40GB HD 600+ RAM Cable Internet Connection XP OS |

Here's what I found:
This usually occurs when the server is busy. Please try Windows Update again later. In some cases, this problem is resolved by installing the latest version of Windows Script. You can download this from http://msdn.microsoft.com/scripting/default.htm. 1. Click on the link to Microsoft Windows Script 5.6 Download. 2. Download the appropriate package. 3. Save Scripten.exe to your desktop. 4. After download double-click on the Scripten.exe program to install. |

Thanks, Jim. I'll try the solution over the lunch hour and let you know if it works. Where did you find that solution? Did I miss it?

I tried doing the script update over lunch. It wouldn't load. I could get to the site, click on the link, but then the next step (either the download site or the actual download) would operate. Frustrated, I called my ISP, once again. After some analysis, they said the "signal quality" coming from them was weak and they would send someone out. I don't know if this this "signal quality" issue would affect my interaction with microsoft. I'll have to research that further.
