internet connection problem!
Just been called out to a friends pc, he is using xp. over the weekend he noticed that he could not load any web pages into his browser, this included MSN,google and several other well known websites, the only one that loads without any problem is the Barclays bank log on page that he uses to do his banking, this loads instantly.
His AV software is up to date and I have tried viewing pages with the firewall switched off, same result, the progress bar at the bottom of the screen loads to about halfway then just hangs and goes no further. His internet connection seems to be fine and has no problem connecting to any internet radio stations via Windows Media Player, however if you try to view the website of the station you are listening to same problem. At present his internet connection is provided via ntl cable as part of a tv,telephone broadband package. any help would be much appreciated, i am a regular reader of the posts on this site but this is the first time i have asked for help. Regards Bryan |

The one web page that you said loads, probably loads because it stored in the temp folder, not because it is connect via internet.

Has he contacted the cable ISP? If you have tried viewing the pages with the firewall on or off and both have the same result if could be trouble within the ISP's system.
Another problem could be the wires or cables connecting the internet to the computer. What are they? What is he using? And how is it all hooked up? exp. CAT-5 wire, USB, etc... Let me know! Good Luck!

It won't be a cable problem if internet radio works, then the cables must work. It sounds to me like a DNS problem.
In XP this can be a royal pain. Basically, you need to remove all the networking components, restart, reinstall, and see if it works. If not, get the WinsockXPfix.exe file from http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/ and run it. |

But you have a point too, by removing networking components and reinstalling! |
